reCaptcha is Getting Too Darned Hard

Unreadable captcha

reCaptcha used to be the least frustrating Captcha system out there. It presented the best solution out there, taking unreadable words from books and making them readable. It helps the OCR, and it helps the Internet.

They forgot that OCR is smart. It was designed to be. You know, in hopes of reaching the OCR singularity.

As some very nice people on SuperUser Chat pointed out, as the OCR systems get trained, they find fewer words hard. Soon the OCR becomes smart enough to recognize 99% of all words.

Meanwhile, the humans are silently working, while getting harder and harder Captchas.

Hell, it’s the poverty cycle for words. Check that. Most of these Captchas aren’t even words anymore.

This is the exact opposite problem from years past, when all the bots would be classified as humans. Now, the humans are being classified as bots.

My Ideas Are Shtty So I'm Going on an Internet Diet

I hope this guy realizes that the first world solutions solve third-world problems too. By accident, granted, but still.

Keep Calm and Carry On - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Keep Calm and Carry On was a poster produced by the British government in 1939 during the beginning of World War II, intended to raise the morale of the British public in the event of invasion. It was little known and never used. The poster was rediscovered in 2000 and has been re-issued by a number of private sector companies, and used as the decorative theme for a range of other products. There are only two known surviving examples of the poster outside of government archives.

From the AP:

Workers at Le Petite Puppy in Greenwich Village say customers tend to stumble in after happy hour and purchase a dog without thinking. Drunken customers now are forbidden to even hold the puppies, because they can drop them.

If you can capture a woman’s imagination, then you will have her. But imagination is a strange creature. It needs time and distance to function properly.
